There were warnings of dangers at Wuhan lab in 2017.
Members of the House Intelligence Committee reported on Wednesday they believe the United States government has engaged in “dangerous scientific research with China” that lends increasing credibility to the theory that COVID-19 may have leaked from a lab in Wuhan as early as October 2019.
Ranking member Devin Nunes of California led the panel that issued a 21-page report laying out “overwhelming” open-source evidence supporting the idea that the coronavirus escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. That evidence included:
A U.S. State Department memo from January revealing that “several researchers at the Wuhan lab were sickened with COVID-19-like symptoms in fall 2019;”
Evidence that there had been a possible shutdown or blackout of information from that facility between October 7-24, 2019; and
Warnings from American diplomats in China in 2017 that the Wuhan lab was “conducting dangerous research on coronaviruses without following necessary safety protocols, risking the accidental outbreak of a pandemic.”
“Significant circumstantial evidence raises serious concerns that the COVID19 outbreak may have been a leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology,” the report stated, adding it was “crucial for health experts and the U.S. Government to understand how the COVID-19 virus originated.”
The report also cited work funded by Director Anthony Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases that appeared to directly or indirectly involve controversial “gain of function” research in which coronaviruses were made “more infectious in humans.”

- For State Department and other officials in the administration to determine what, if any, actions should be taken against China.
- That the intelligence agencies would look into other conspiracy theories involving the COVID-19 virus that may have credence.
